Reports from COP21 and Bali

Dear friend of INTO.

In this issue we bring you a summary of COP21 in Paris, the Asian Regional Meeting in Bali, Plans for ICNT 17 in Bali (2017) and so much more.   We are pleased to be able to announce the next round of the Small Grants Program and hope to inspire you to take part in some World Heritage Day (April 18th) activities.

The INTO Secretariat is here to help and support you.   We welcome your suggestions and comments.

Sincerely Catherine and the Secretariat Team

A note from our Chair.

I’ve just finished my first six months as the new Chair of INTO and while it’s already been a steep learning curve, I know I’ve still got lots to learn.  I am very excited about celebrating World Heritage Day on 18 April, to which I know you are all contributing ideas and examples. I am looking forward to hearing your stories, and quietly hoping for some amazing sport-related ones!

Many people are wondering whether INTO will change under my Chairmanship. The answer is, as ever, yes and no.  What will NOT change is the fantastic support we give to each other, large and small, all over the world, our passion for our natural and built heritage binding us together and helping is to share experience and knowledge. But we will be focusing more on the issues that came up at the Congress in September from INTO members.  At our EC meeting in November we discussed these and agreed that they could be grouped into three things: family, growth and voice. So we will continue to develop, under ‘family’ what it means to be a member of the INTO family of National Trusts around the world; under ‘growth’ to recruit new members and assist in the growth of new Trusts where there is a call for them; and under ‘voice’ to raise our combined voice for heritage, as we will be doing on 18 April.

This newsletter is packed with examples of what we do best: innovation, sharing stories and speaking out for heritage.  I am so pleased to be part of this wonderful movement and enjoying my new role immensely!

As you know, World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18 April.

This year’s official theme is the heritage of sport, which probably works better for some than others (I’m thinking of Merdeka Stadium in Malaysia, the Isle of Man’s TT race, horseracing at the Garrison Savannah in Bridgetown, endless cricket pitches and pavilions at NTEWNI properties like Sheffield Park, etc, etc – I’m sure there are many more examples).

BUT we would like to promote whatever you are planning to celebrate the day, so do please let us have information of your WHD events, workshops, lectures, etc to share with our networks.

ALSO, we would like to use World Heritage Day as an opportunity to ‘raise our collective voice’ on heritage matters so would be grateful for updates from you on what you’re working on; what you’re worried about; what the important heritage issues in your country are, which will form the basis of INTO media work here in the UK.   Please do get in touch.   If you don’t have any of this written down and would like to arrange a time to chat, that is also possible – just let us know!

With best wishes

PS – This is the Blogathon we did a few years ago for WHD (a series of blogs from INTO members with an ‘education’ theme posted at 12 noon in each country as the day passed)
