For comparison: the Internet consumes up to 10% of the world’s electricity, and YouTube and Netflix – 1%.

It is noteworthy that now Bitcoin consumes less energy than a year ago – then it took about 150 TWh to maintain the network. However, the current 125.13 TW•h is also quite a lot.

Green Blockchain Technologies

For this reason, it is also impossible to accurately calculate how much electricity the miners of the Bitcoin network receive from renewable energy sources (RES). But many recent studies indicate that the share of such sources in bitcoin mining is constantly growing.

So, according to CCAF, in 2021, about 39% of the energy spent on BTC mining came from renewable energy, most of which comes from hydroelectric power plants. At least partially, more than 75% of all miners use energy from renewable energy sources. According to the Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC), green mining accounts for up to 56% of all BTC mining. Such figures, by the way, make mining one of the greenest industries in the world.

At the same time, according to the researchers, BTC miners, if possible, prefer to use the “green” energy structure where it is available, since the tariffs for such electricity are cheaper. For example, in Iceland, the Genesis Mining Enigma farm has been operating exclusively on geothermal energy since 2013, because this sector is developed in the country. And in Kazakhstan, the majority of miners still use the energy of coal-fired thermal power plants – the renewable energy sector in the country is not developed.

It is also worth noting that after the migration of Chinese miners to other countries, the share of “green” mining will increase dramatically. There are several reasons for this. In China, two-thirds of the miners used coal-fired power, and in the US and Russia, the countries where Chinese miners have moved, the share of renewable energy is high. According to various estimates, about 50% of BTC mining in the US comes from renewable energy sources. Also, after the relocation of Chinese miners, the number of old and less energy efficient devices have decreased, instead of which more modern devices have connected to the network.

It is also important that interest in “green” mining among large companies is growing – even “green” data centers are entering the market. So, now the American firm Marathon Digital Holdings will build a data center with a capacity of 300 MW in Texas, 70% of whose energy will be obtained from wind and solar power plants. Also in Texas, BIT Mining Limited plans to build a 57.2 MW data center, 85% of which will be provided by green energy. In May 2021, Argo Blockchain bought two “green” data centers in Canada, powered by a local hydroelectric power plant. What is sustainability?

It is worth emphasizing that thinking about the future does not mean making sacrifices or restrictions in the present. The goal of sustainable development is to manage the available resources in a way that fully meets the needs of modern society. Is this even possible?

A Brief History Of The Idea

The inspiration for the concept of sustainability was forestry. People have needed and exploited wood in great quantities for thousands of years. At some point, however, they realized that the key to survival was to keep cutting and planting at such a rate that the forest would always have a chance to regenerate itself.

In a global context, the concept of “sustainability” first appeared in 1987 as part of J. Brundtland’s “Our Common Future” report to the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED). As a revolutionary and unequivocally necessary thought, it also dominated the 1992 UN conference widely known as the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Its outcome was the famous document “Agenda 21,” which formulated the basic principles for the implementation of sustainable development in the world, especially in the context of local life.

Two more decades have passed, and the topic has become even more relevant and serious. At the Johannesburg summit in 2002, known as “Rio 10+,” a partnership plan for achieving the development goals was developed. Ten years later, again in Rio (“Rio 20+”), UN representatives focused on the institutional framework and the so-called green economy.

The principle of sustainable development is also taken into account in the current Constitution of the Republic of Poland from 1997.

Goals Of Sustainable Development

Even the most beautiful ideas mean little if they are not reflected in actions. That is why the latest UN document, known as the 2030 Agenda, articulates 17 tangible and concrete goals to be achieved through sustainable development policies. 

They address key issues such as:

1. Reducing poverty, hunger and promoting health care;
2. Ensuring access to education and gender equality;
3. Sustainable management of water resources and energy;
4. Supporting economic development and reducing unemployment;
5. Making cities safer;
6. Confronting climate change and water pollution.

For each of these goals, there is a detailed implementation plan with postulates regarding the expected results in 2030. Among them you can find specific recommendations, such as reducing waste production, the restoration of degraded areas. They also mention, among other things, the reduction of illegal financial flows or an end to poaching and trafficking of protected species of animals and plants.

A very important aspect of today’s plan for implementing sustainable development is global partnership. The signatories of the 2030 Agenda are committed to financial development aid, the transfer of environmentally friendly technologies, and the promotion of open, fair trade.

As a result, the entire region is economically stagnant, leading to further unemployment and poverty.

As a holder of free will, you make decisions every day that are within the legal limits, but leave you a great deal of freedom. • An overall reduction in unnecessary shopping.

But the human role is not limited to ecology. According to the idea of sustainable development, people educated and endowed with natural talents will help others by sharing their knowledge and skills. Solving local problems, volunteering, or developing innovative economic activities are aspects on which the well-being of society and its future depend.

A Critique of the Concept of Sustainable Development

The UN’s lofty principles may seem impeccable. But critics point to the three most important shortcomings of the idea of sustainable development: it is too boring, too general, and also too late.

According to detractors, the concept itself is not attractive enough to win people’s hearts.  The rational management of dwindling resources does not appeal to the imagination, nor does the idea of “less pollution. Plans for “prosperous development” or an ecological revolution are likely to generate more positive reactions.

Nor does the generality of wording, which is difficult for the average person to interpret. Sustainable development is often perceived as a beautiful slogan without specific content. Some critics even suggest abandoning the concept of improving all aspects of human life and focusing primarily on protecting the environment.

The coffee industry has a significant impact on the global economy. More than 2.5 billion cups of the invigorating drink are drunk every day. For many of the 25 million people who work in the industry, its production is the only way to make a living. Therefore, any ecological disasters threaten not only the development of the entire industry, but also the level of social well-being of individual regions.

The process of growing and producing coffee is subject to many challenges, including climate change, fluctuations in the price of the product on world markets, and the aging of coffee trees, which reduces their yields. Therefore, reforming the industry is a vital task for its representatives.

Specialized guidelines – Global Coffee Platform and Sustainable Coffee Challenge – were created and agreed upon for this purpose. The latter document became a guide to action for the 50 leading coffee producers in achieving the main goal – to make the production of the popular beverage the most environmentally friendly and socially protected in the food industry. Bringing together the efforts of different organizations, the initiators of the project identified three main goals – ensuring the well-being of farmers growing valuable beans and local communities, protecting the ecosystem, and promoting responsible coffee consumption.

Science and technology have greatly increased social productivity and freed up labor. For example, agricultural production can be maximized by intelligent and scientific cultivation. Scientific research can provide better seeds for sowing (e.g., hybrid rice), mechanized agriculture can reduce the burden on farmers, and a variety of agricultural products can increase farmers’ income. In addition, advances in science and technology have increased the efficiency of human labor, and the time saved can create additional value, such as processing agricultural products and working outside, which can also increase farmers’ income. Moreover, scientific and technological advances allow us to effectively monitor climate change and predict natural disasters, helping us deal with these problems. All of these advances have greatly increased social sustainability. However, such advances also create problems related to global warming, climate extremes, and pollution, leading to greater uncertainty in the laws of nature. Therefore, human development in the future must consider the impact of human activities on the laws of nature.

For me, the coexistence of indigenous knowledge with science and technology is the way forward. We must obey the basic rules of being part of nature, using our wisdom to improve living conditions. We must recognize that we can never live independently of other elements of nature, such as animals, plants and even microorganisms.

You are an expert in education, and you mentioned how important the right kind of education is. How can education help us teach people to understand their connection to nature and to better use science and technology to produce products from nature without depleting the natural environment?

Education as well as science and technology are the foundation of human development. The importance of education to human development manifests itself in two ways. One is to increase societal productivity in terms of production, and the other is to promote the concept of sustainable development through environmental education. For example, education can help people use natural resources more efficiently. I found this with herders in Inner Mongolia, who through education gained knowledge on how to delay the grazing period so that grass grows better, allowing them to have more efficient and healthy pastures and more income from their cattle. They were able to learn from the experiences of their elders and local and regional research groups. Supplementing indigenous knowledge with modern science and technology would greatly improve local livelihoods while maintaining their balance with the local environment.

Environmental education can increase people’s awareness and participation in environmental protection, popularize environmental knowledge and skills, and thus contribute to achieving sustainable development. Education is also the main way for the large-scale, rapid and effective dissemination of science and technology. Through education, the heritage and innovations of science and technology can be realized, continually developed and strengthened, and ultimately contribute effectively to human development without harming the environment.

How can we make this message that the key to reformulating human development lies in creating (rather than destroying) indigenous knowledge and culture that is more policy-friendly and influential?

We talked about knowledge and education of individuals and small communities, but more important is the education of society. In particular, I think we need to make an effort to improve environmental education for politicians and members of governments at the national and international levels. I like the structure of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because it helps us think about sustainable “us” and reminds us of personal behavior (e.g., our carbon footprint and consumer habits). Meanwhile, we need more education at all levels of society, so more and more people are looking at these different elements as an interconnected whole. Obviously, these 17 goals are not equally important for different countries, regions, or communities. But identifying the goals that should be emphasized in a particular context and ensuring that they are integrated at all levels of education can be an important step forward.

If you were to propose a new definition of human development, what would it be?

I would like to identify some words to contribute to the new definition. One is “harmony,” emphasizing the importance of the relationship between people and nature. The second is “evenness” or “even development,” which implies the joint development of all aspects of the SDGs as well as all regions. The third is “leaving no one behind,” indicating that human development should benefit everyone, regardless of race, gender, and social class.

We have tried to do everything we can, including efficient waste management, preserving biodiversity, developing an employee well-being program and an Employee Code of Conduct. We also developed a Supplier Code of Conduct to protect the environment while supplying our customers with essential products and services which they need to run their businesses. We’ve placed ESG goals on the horizon of 5 years to show our intention to not only maintain, but constantly improve our sustainable development management system. This system is based on our previous commitments and the actions that follow suit. Uralchem is currently developing an ESG strategy which will outline our goals and priorities but it’s pretty clear what concerns we’ll be tackling – product safety, environmental protection, production safety, responsible sourcing.

At the moment, both corporations are developing a climate plan to follow the ESG trend. The top priority is ambitious goals and significant achievements in environmental sustainability.

The increase in agricultural productivity can help to combat world hunger. Proper use of fertilizers, along with land-management practices, can lead to a greater yield of food and crops. The group was founded in 1987 and it’s work is primarily focused on developing high quality products which are safe for the environment, this helps to increase food yields and increase soil fertility.

Sustainability is a necessary condition for moving forward, as well as identifying & mitigating emerging new risks.
