The INTO Incubator is an international learning workshop. Participants will learn about the hugely successful National Trust model for heritage conservation and how this can be applied in their own organisations.

29 March – 4 April 2020

Who should apply?

Applications are encouraged from organisations that:

  • Are active in the conservation of natural and/or cultural heritage.
  • Are interested in learning about the National Trust model and its potential in their own context.
  • Are ready to consider implementation of strategic change.
  • Would like to join a global network sharing heritage best practice.

Participants will spend five days at the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester, England.

Two preparatory webinars will take place online in December.

Day 1 & 2

The first two days will focus on the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland in its 125 anniversary year. INTO chair Dame Fiona Reynolds will host a welcome dinner, before visits to a range of natural and cultural sites in the NT’s stewardship. Participants will be invited to interact with trust staff to understand how the organisation manages its complex portfolio of British heritage. A visit to the NT head office will provide opportunities to meet leadership staff in a relaxed and informal setting and discuss topics ranging from membership models to volunteering.

Day 3 & 4

On Wednesday and Thursday, participants will be joined by representatives of other INTO member organisations, to discuss the journey towards becoming a National Trust. Representatives from National Trusts across Europe and beyond will share their experience of establishing National Trusts, before joining incubator participants for in-depth workshops on specific themes, from taking on management of your first property to running a successful advocacy programme. These days will be topped off by a traditional English high tea to celebrate participants completion of the learning part of the incubator.

Day 5

Our final day in Cirencester will be a strategic planning workshop. Participants will work with an external facilitator to explore how the learning of the previous four days can be taken forward into their own organisation. A series of objectives in a one year vision will be established and a network created to support our new INTO members for the work ahead.
