Clearing of a Historic Park and Greenhouse

The tomb writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, the ground-breaking (literally!) pilot project of the Czech National Trust

The working holiday:  Participants will be working on CNT’s pilot project – clearing parkland around the chapel and mausoleum linked to the fascinating story of Marie Ebner Eschenbach, one of the most remarkable literary personalities of the 19th century.  This Czech novelist and short story writer was known at the time for her psychological novels written in German, but following the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, her work has been largely forgotten.  The CNT now aims to draw attention to her legacy and you will be helping to restore the surrounding parkland and the remains of a 19th century greenhouse that the CNT plans to convert into its visitor and volunteer facility in the next few years.

The site is situated near Kromeriz and its beautiful domed chapel is built in the Classicist style – a distinct piece of architecture offering splendid views of the rolling landscape.  You’ll have plenty of time to explore Kromeriz and the CNT will arrange tours of its UNESCO-listed gardens, chateau and prestigious art gallery.  Outings to other nearby towns can also be organised.

Accommodation:  Full board in a newly-opened hostel in Kromeriz’s main square.  The hostel has wi-fi and a pleasant café.  Breakfast and dinner will be served in the café; lunches will be brought to the work site.

Dates:  21/05/2017 – 28/05/2017

Romania

Working Holidays in Romania – Summer 2017

These holidays are organised by the Pro Patrimonio Foundation, which was set up in 2000 to save, preserve and restore the architectural and cultural heritage of Romania.  It provides support for the restoration and re-use of historic buildings and actively promotes the use of appropriate construction techniques and traditional craftsmanship.

Wooden Church Fresco Restoration

Ateliere Tibanesti_Alexandra MihailciucS

The working holiday:  The wooden church in the village of Ursi dates from the 18th century and is a rare example of a church with fresco-style paintings on both the inside and the outside.  In 2010 the main arch collapsed due to lack of maintenance and general neglect.  Following a major restoration programme undertaken by the Foundation, structural and roof repairs have been completed and the church is structurally safe.  There is still a lot of work to be done in restoring the paintings and this is your opportunity to learn fresco restoration techniques and help to preserve this unique art.

Ursi lies at the foot of the Carpathian mountains, very close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Horezu Monastery and the beautiful natural park.  You’ll be able to discover the authentic rural environment of the village, where traditional crafts are perpetuated.

Accommodation:  Participants can choose from: camping in the yard, 4 beds in the hay barn or 2 double rooms in a traditional house.

Dates:  07/08/2017 – 12/08/2017

Price:  100 € (£93*) for camping in the yard; 120 € (£111*) for accommodation in the barn or 160 € (£148*) to stay in the traditional house.  Each price includes a trip to the Horezu monastery.

Conservation & Rehabilitation of the Historic Garden at Villa Golescu, Arges County

villa-golescu

The working holiday:  You’ll be based at Villa Golescu in the charming city of Campulung Muscel which is situated in the outlying hills of the Carpathian mountains.  Built in 1910, the villa is a beautiful example of the neo-romanian style in the region and it has survived the wars and communist era thanks to the family’s descendants who wished to save it for future generations.

The villa’s grounds comprise a beautiful terraced park and gardens that include many rare and exotic species brought from abroad by the original owner during the early years of last century.  Help us to restore and conserve these unique and historic gardens!   Tasks will be varied and include repairing the stonework of the garden’s walls, some clearing of vegetation and helping to reconstruct an old pergola in the grounds.

There’ll also be the opportunity to discover the rich heritage of Campulung Muscel, which dates back to 1300, and enjoy the beautiful forests and mountain landscapes of the area.

Accommodation:  Participants can choose from:  camping in the grounds,  1 room with 6 beds in the villa’s annex or 3 double rooms and 1 single room in the villa.  All meals will be served in the villa.
